Regular Car Reviews: 1990 Lexus LS400

The LS400 wasn’t meant to turn a profit, it was meant to draw people into the brand, to help establish the Lexus name in the marketplace. And…I mean, it worked, …

  1. Oh man I wasn't sure if you did this car. A friend of mine had a 93 LS400 I believe, not real sure of the year. That was one of the best cars I ever drove. Until my friends wife's son totaled it. Two problems with the car, the paint job was complete crap and was starting to peel and the stupid vacuum fluorescent display which if it works properly is pretty cool but most of them suffered from failures. The one he had the dash would occasionally light up or do this like techno Rave kind of flashing thing and then come on. Also if it didn't come on you had to guess how much fuel you had. But that was a great car and still is I would have no qualms about buying a Lexus LS400. The only thing is I do not like cars. I don't like stepping down into them I would rather climb up a little bit or just slide into it. Yes I do drive a second generation Honda CRV yes I do enjoy the vehicle and no I do not have to step down into it. But the thing is stone-cold reliable and until I find something better I'm going to keep it. Hell I might just run the wheels off of it and since it only has 170,000 miles on it, it'll be awhile.

  2. The one thing this analysis misses is the Lexus dealer experience. Go from a Lincoln or Cadillac dealer to a Lexus dealer. Go through all of the maintenance under warranty. You'll buy a Lexus every time. It was not just the car, it was the OWNERSHIP experience that helped establish the brand.
