Smartphone photography demonstration

*** Sound has been fixed, but there is a noticeable lag and I can’t fix that. Sorry guys. ***

I’m going to discuss some principles, and show you what works well for me using an iPhone. If you use Android, I’m sure there are useful tips for you as well. General rules of photography:

Control the lighting: With LEDs you can turn down the blues and increase the whites to get better photographic results.
Adjust Exposure: Tap the screen where it is too bright to reduce the intensity, so that the subject is lit properly.
Tap to focus: Make sure your subject is in focus, or shoot it again so it comes out right.
Frame the subject: Put the subject in the middle of the frame, so the viewer knows what they are looking at.
Avoid excessive digital zoom: Fill the viewfinder with your subject, but avoid zooming in too much or you’ll end up with grainy pictures. You can crop those 12 mp pictures after they are taken, and you should get some pretty nice results.
Post Processing: Add a couple of clicks of Contrast or Black Point to make your subject pop, but don’t overdo it.
AVOID VERTICAL VIDEO/Photography: ’nuff said

  1. Just wanted to add, when you talked about the zoom. When you tap it and it goes to "2x" that is the optical zoom, and when you pinch with your fingers it changes the digital zoom which produces lower quality images slightly. I'm sure you know this but it wasn't mentioned when discussing it. I try to always use optical zoom if i can.

  2. Hey thanks for some great tips, have you played around with the portrait mode on that phone at all? I use filters while diving if I don’t have lights, playing with a yellow filter and a blue / UV spectrum to capture critters with bio fluorescence.tried to share a pic of a flower anemone, but can’t share pics in comments I’m guessing.but they can have some very good results.keep up the good videos…..look fwrd to next one

  3. Thanks for all of the helpful info when it comes to videos and photos. I am one….who has always filmed with the phone facing up, and couldn't figure out why…it looked too thin lol. Ive had a few folks help me learn this, including you now. Thanks Mark
