Print Talk :: photography in Platinum Palladium – Viral Trends

Print Talk :: photography in Platinum Palladium

Having spent a week in Arizona at Hidden Light, I’ve made many photography videos behind the scenes at their amazing photo lab. Matt Beaty is not only an interesting photographer, but he is one of the best platinum palladium printers working today.

Platinum palladium is a beautiful alternative process that’s made a resurgence in recent years. Warm tones and sharp details are two of the main characteristics. I sat down with Matt to talk about his approach and what he does.

  1. The drive from Flag to Phoenix is beautiful until you get there……..then you have to drive through PHX to get to Sky Harbor. Just stay north. Great series of videos Ted, really enjoyed every minute. I must go there next time I'm out west. I would love to do some of my images in palladium.

  2. Are there innovative ways to get the same kind of digital colour grade prints that you can get from dye transfer prints? Monochrome at this moment is thriving but I really want colour to get another breakthrough, atm it's kinda meh.

  3. It's funny to me how Ted has changed his personality throughout making AOP videos.
In the early ones he was very stoic and authoritarian while sharing thoughts on composition of the photography masters and now he's like "boom" and "totally" and "awesome".
It was still an interesting few videos for me though. I enjoyed finding out more about this type of printing.

  4. Ted, yet another wonderful video Ted. Really interesting and thought provoking (ie, I want to print :)). Thanks for posting and these guys are super to watch. "Will it accept the chemistry" Love it.

  5. So, How exactly do I get going in this? How do I go from taking an image from Photoshop, to making a Palladium print? What gear do I need and where can I get that gear? Alternatively, what's the cheapest route to shoot 8×10 negatives? Don't want to spend a couple grand on a view camera I don't end up using…Thanks!

  6. Okay Ted great video but one thing …
again you are expressing the fact that you are not comfortable sitting close to another man and following your videos it happens a lot. So much that there is a pattern. Is there something you want to share with us or are you still afraid of certain feelings .
We are open minded so feel free to express yourself hehehehe 😉

  7. That's what I pity about these kids today–they never knew platinum printing, never experienced the amazing variety of papers we used to have in photography. All they have to play with is silly Photoshop. Great video!

  8. Another cool video. The commercial photographer I worked for/taught me said he used to buy his Kodak Slides in big batches and notice color changes between the batches. So maybe consistency has gone down hill – but I guess it was never perfect…

  9. This series on Hidden Light inspires me so much, my own dark room was dismantled 2 years ago, my enlarger is held together with clothes pegs.. but after watching these video I remember how much fun I had making prints, and I want to do it all again!

  10. Oh you gotta do the film stuff again Ted,i miss this kinda content. Film developing, talking about platinum palladium n wet plate collodion stuff. Its something about seeing someone doing it rather than reading it from a book.
