9 Photography Trends I’m Avoiding

It’s refreshing to see new ideas, as well as classic photography done well. But what about all the fads and trends that just won’t die? I’m going to list off several that I’ve seen over and over again. Maybe you’re running out of ideas for concept shoots? Maybe you shouldn’t replicate the same gimmick that 1000 other photographers have been using. Come up with something different, or stick to the basics.

  1. Hi Ed, not your best work. If you don't like to see the same trend a lot don't look at so many photos, per day. You listed 9 examples of trends you don't like. This is not an exhaustive list. You could have made them 10 just as easily. My point is you had the same issue with all 9 examples/trends. I think this epsd would have been more fruitful if you had talked about how to get creative and find new concepts in this oversaturated world of imagery. Huge fan. Love your work.

  2. Shots where the model or couple are shot with HSS (usually) to light them against a large background (castle stairs, beach sunset, etc). The problem is the model/couple are 1/100th of the image. Either take a landscape shot, or close in on the model! 🙂 Good topic, Ed!

  3. Those pictures of Horns, Animal masks, Balloons, darkness, ect, are not really pictures, but more like messages. Messages to others who participate in dark deeds. I could show you proof, but once you know, you can't take it back. My friend, please do not concern yourself with those images, only ignore them. Have a good day my Friend.

  4. My 11 year old will love a movie I think is cliched. It’s new to him, but I’ve seen it a million times before. Likewise, you’ve been in the business for years, Ed. A lot of these photographers are young (In experience, if not age), and they’re finding their personal voice in public. I’m inclined to give them a break. Having said that, I have ,my own peeve. Waifish girls/young women with flowers in their hair, wearing a pretty summer dress taken in a field or forest with a shallow DoF and backlit natural light. Some YouTube photographers specialise in it, and although they’re very talented, I want so say “it’s time to flex your creative muscles and grow. Try something new. You don’t want to be taking the same photos over and over again at 80”

  5. My daughter is an aspiring special effects makeup artist, when I take pictures of her face paintings, or makeup work I do it to show off her work not my photography. Of course providing her with quality photography makes her work look better.

  6. As someone who is still learning photography I like to deconstruct how some images are taken. However, even with that in mind there are still images that drive me mad as they are so repetitive, including but not exclusive to: "Little Red Riding Hood" in an artificially darkened wood, and "The Poker Player" taken with HSS to catch his cards being thrown in and then goodness knows how many still lives such as splashes, waterdrops etc.
